On Lange Jan’s Neck

Board the train for an afternoon in Amersfoort. You’ll be in the compact city centre within 15 minutes and walk past the cosy shopping streets and past historic buildings and narrow canals. Climb the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, the city’s figurehead, for a beautiful view.

“From the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, also called the Lange Jan by Amersfoort citizens, you’ve got a beautiful view of the city.”

To climb the Lange Jan, as the Amersfoort citizens call this 98-meter high tower, you have to be in excellent shape. There are no less of 346 steps. If the thought already makes you tired, you can also admire the tower from a patio on the Lieve Vrouweplein. What you will be missing out on, though, is the stunning views of the city. For instance, you can see Muurhuizen, a beautiful age-old street that runs around the centre in a semi-circle. Certainly worth a visit!
